Assignments

Each assignment in the course is given a point total for that assignment.

You will have to complete the following assignments: Assignments 1, 2, 6, 10, 13, 17.  These assignments will total up to 55 points of the 75 possible.

You will also have to complete additional assignments worth up to a total of 20 points.  (This could be four 5-point assignments, two 10-point assignments, etc. – any combination of assignments worth up to twenty points.) After the required assignments are completed, you may select assignments from any of the goals, either the required or the optional.

You may also complete additional assignments for additional points.

The possible assignments are listed below with the points attached to each assignment:

1.      (10 points) The Two forms of the Catholic Mass: the Tridentine Mass (1570, after the Council of Trent) and the Novus ordo Mass (1969, after the Second Vatican Council)

2.      (5 points) Palestrina’s music 

3.      (10 points) Renaissance Masses

4.      (5 points) Compare the Music of Palestrina and Byrd 

5.      (5 points) Concerted Mass: Haydn and Mozart 

6.      (10 points) Concerted Masses: an introduction

7.      (10 points) 19th Century: paths of musical development

8.      (10 points) Singing Gregorian Chant (Requires some musical background)

9.      (5 points) 19th Century: comparing Liszt to Gabrieli (16th-17th century)

10.  (10 points) Chant Restoration Movement 

11.  (5 points) Group Project - Debate the motu proprio 

12.  (10 points) Modes (You should have music reading skills for this assignment, AND your skills should include reading square note Vatican notation.)

13.  (10 points) Chant (You do not need to know how to read music to do this assignment.) 

14.  (5 points) Liturgical Year Calendar

15.  (5 points) Notre Dame School 

16.  (5 points) Reforms of Pope John XXII (14th Century) 

17.  (10 points) Second Vatican Council and the Music that Followed

 18.  (5 points) Liturgical Calendar, Proper of the Mass, and Music Planning for the Liturgy (This assignment is most appropriate for musicians.) 

19.  (5 points) Reading chant notation  (This assignment assumes familiarity with modern musical notation.)
