-
If you have access to the hallmark channel, (see http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/) the University of Notre Dame's Sunday Mass is broadcast on Sundays at 11:00am.
D. Write a paper about the differences in the two forms of the Mass
-
1500-1700 words in length
-
The paper should incorporate
-
your observations - this is VERY important. Your observations are not opinions. They relate what you see and hear, and especially how you respond to the music/ritual as art. I want to know that you have actually experienced the music/ritual and that you have engaged it in some way.
-
commentary by other writers – this is ALSO VERY important. Your observations are valuable, but remember that this is not an “opinion” paper. It is a research paper. Part of that research is observing what you see and hear and observing your response to what you see and hear. Part of that research is gathering and documenting the comments of others.
-
-
Comment specifically on the music:
-
What are the differences in music between the two forms of the rite?
-
How does the music relate to or differ from your observations and research about the general differences between the two forms of the Mass?
-
-
Guidelines regarding internet research:
-
The principal concern with internet research – as it is with any research – is the reliability of the sources. Constantly ask the question, “What evidence do I have that this source is reliable.”
-
Articles should be signed.
-
Wikipedia articles may or may not be reliable. Articles that are signed and that use references to scholarly works should be fine.
-
If you are not sure about the reliability of a source ask me about it.
-
-
Different search engines will provide different results.
-
Google scholar will show more scholarly results than Google: http://scholar.google.com/
-
-
Some scholarly organizations put some of their journal articles online:
-
The Society for Catholic Liturgy puts the contents of its journal only (not full-text articles) online: http://www.liturgysociety.org/JOURNAL/antiphon.htm
-
The Church Music Association of America does have a number of articles on its website (scroll down the right column): http://www.musicasacra.com/. (Very conservative organization, but with solid scholarship behind its work.)
-
-
When using a search engine:
-
Try to focus the search by choosing key words carefully.
-
If you want the words to appear on a website together, enclose them in quotes. For example, if you search for Edward Schaefer, you will get websites that have both of these words, but not necessarily together. If you want only websites on which the words appear together, you must enclose them in quotes: “Edward Schaefer.”
-
-
www.amazon.com is a commercial site, not a scholarly site. However, many of its books have reviews. The reviews themselves may not be scholarly, but they can sometimes give you clues as to the nature of a particular book.
-
Of course, you are also permitted to use the “hard copy” resource: the library.
-
Google Books (http://books.google.com/) has promise, but it is not yet focused on sacred music.
-
The Gutenberg Project might be worth a look: http://www.gutenberg.org/catalog/
-

The paper will be evaluated on both content and with respect to grammar, punctuation, clarity, coherence, and organization. Feedback on all these areas will be given within one week of the paper’s submittal. The rubric for grading this paper follows:
