points) Renaissance Masses
A. Answer the questions below on the form provided at this link and submit the form. (When you submit the form make sure you follow the directions at this link carefully.) Activities and Questions:

Find what the term “Mass” means when applied to a Musical composition

Find what a "Cantus firmus" (or "Tenor") Mass is, what a “Parody Mass” is and what a “Paraphrase Mass” is.

Find a total of least five Renaissance Masses, that is, Masses composed between 1400 and 1600. These five Masses should represent all of the types of Mases listed above, that is, there should be at least one Cantus firmus Mass, one Parody Mass, and one Paraphrase Mass in the group.

Classify each of the Masses as a "Cantus firmus," “Paraphrase,” or “Parody” Mass.

Listen to the chant Ave

Listen to the part of the Missa Ave regina coelorum by Guillaume Dufay that is on the recordings website.

Can you hear the melody from the chant? (It is highly ornamented and pretty obscured. It would be typical not to hear it. It was used as a compositional device and not necessarily with the intent that the listeners hear the device.)
B. Create a Powerpoint presentation of these Masses

The presentation should be designed as is you were using it to teach the concepts of "Parody Mass" and "Paraphrase Mass" to someone.

Remember that the presentation will run, or be viewed, without your presence to narrate it, so you will have to design it accordingly, either with texts, pop-ups, audio narrative, or some other means. It must be completely self-contained, so that a viewer will learn about the material just by what is seen and heard on the Powerpoint presentation.

The end of the project must have a slide showing the sources of materials for the presentation.

The general approach to the project is that you are creating a presentation to teach the concept of the Mass as a musical composition and the Parody Mass and Paraphrase Mass as types of this musical form, using the music of one or more specific composers to demonstrate the genres.

The project will be evaluated on both content, and organization, clarity and coherence. Feedback on all these areas will be given within one week of the project’s submittal. All members of the group will get the same grade, that grade given to the whole project, provided all members participate. The rubric for grading this paper follows:
