Century
A. Read about the various paths of development of music in the Catholic Church during the nineteenth century.:
-
Edward Schaefer, Catholic Music through the Ages (Mundelein, IL: Hillenbrand, 2008), Chapter Five, pp. 78-79; Chapter Six, pp. 97-104; Chapter Seven.

-
the readings and websites listed in assignment nine
B. Listen to the recordings associated with the reading in Catholic Music through the Ages (above).
C. Create an online Powerpoint presentation. The presentation should have the following:
-
a short introduction that describes/defines each of the following types of music developments of nineteenth-century Catholic music:
-
the continuation of the Concerted Mass tradition
-
bombastic, grandiose, nationalistic music
-
music of the Cecilian movement.
-
-
a “genealogy” chart, showing the major representatives (composers) of these musical developments, along with their predecessors and successors, with a short commentary (up to 25 words) on each. The commentary on each composer should mention at least one musical composition of that composer that exemplifies the musical development of which that composer is a representative. (This might be done best with pop-ups.)
B. Listen to recordings of the pieces mentioned in the genealogy chart, at least one in each genre. Add your own commentary to the presentation guiding a listener through each of these compositions.
-
Help the listener know what he/she should listen for in the music.
-
Tell how this music relates to its “family members” in the chart.
-
100-150 words max.
-
Incorporate audio files of the works (any format that Powerpoint will support) or links to audio files or Youtube performances.
The project will be evaluated on both content, and organization, clarity and coherence. Feedback on all these areas will be given within one week of the project’s submittal. All members of the group will get the same grade, that grade given to the whole project, provided all members participate. The rubric for grading this paper follows:
