Assignment 17
(10 points)
Second
A. Write an annotated outline of 20 musical compositions that are common today in Catholic worship. The outline should include the title and composer of each piece and a short description of the work, especially about its text.
-
You may add to the list from the course text: Schaefer, Catholic Church Music Through the Ages, Chapter Eight.
-
If you are a Catholic, you may use your own experience and/or that of your parents or other relatives.
-
If you are not a Catholic, interview a parish musician working in a Catholic church.
B. Write a summary (500-1,000 words) discussing the merits and/or demerits of this music.
-
You may use the course text (Schaefer, Catholic Church Music Through the Ages, Chapter Nine) as a point of departure (either agreeing or disagreeing) for your discussion.
-
Your paper will have to accommodate various points of view, if there are any.
-
You will have to support your arguments. If there are problems with the music, what are they? If there are special merits to the music, what are they? Document your thoughts. That is, your arguments should represent more than personal opinion.
